THE LEAD

Magic: The Gathering® - Fallout® On Sale Tomorrow After Downtime!

The wait is nearly over – click here to read all about Magic: The Gathering® – Fallout®, coming to Magic Online tomorrow following downtime!

A couple items that didn’t make it into the original announcement:

• Fallout® cards will appear in Treasure Chests after downtime
• No new avatars with this set, nor are there any events.
• The set will be legal in all formats – including Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Freeform, and Commander – immediately following downtime

We also have a new Premium effect to debut with Fallout® - the Pip-Boy frame and animation. Take a look!

Downtime Tomorrow – 9 a.m. to Noon PT

Magic Online will be down for scheduled maintenance tomorrow, October 16, from 9 a.m. to approximately 12 noon Pacific time (16:00-19:00 UTC). Be sure to follow our social media outlets (Discord, Twitter/X, and more) to keep real-time tabs on this release. As a reminder, our Help site and Forums will also be down during this period.

Vintage Cube LIVE Prize Cube Revealed – Plus Curation Details

The 540 cards have been selected and the list is ready – click here to learn all about the Vintage Cube LIVE Prize Cube from our curators Ryan Spain and Chris Wolf.

Remember, this Cube will be available to draft on Magic Online on Friday, October 25 immediately after the Live draft concludes around 8:30 p.m. PT (03:30 UTC Saturday)!

Watch the Ultimate Guard Finals Friday-Saturday, October 25^th-26^th

The Vegas 8 will gather live at Magic Con Las Vegas to Rochester draft a real-life version of the Magic Online Vintage Cube on October 25-26. Everyone keeps what they draft, then the players compete for the lion’s share of the remaining undrafted cards – this is going to be epic – someone will walk away with a Black Lotus!

Catch streaming coverage of the draft on Friday, October 25^th starting immediately following Day One of the Magic World Championship – roughly 6 p.m. PT (01:00 Saturday UTC) – on twitch.tv/UltimateGuardLive and co-streamed on the MTGO Twitch channel.

Then on Saturday, the players return for three rounds of play – will someone already have the Lotus, or will be up for grabs for the winner? Streaming coverage begins right after Worlds Day Two concludes around 6 p.m. PT (01:00 Sunday UTC).

Creator Showdown Results – Tandy Makes It Two!

Dozens of your favorite Magic content creators were in action on Saturday competing for up to $5,000 in cash and prizes in the MTGO Creator Showdown!

In this Duel Commander battle, Todd Anderson notched his second consecutive undefeated Showdownd! His Esper deck led by Animatou, the Fateshifter bested Skura's innovative mono-green build captained by Azusa, Lost but Seeking in the finals to claim the top prize of $1,250 USD. Other cash winners included PieGonti (Aragorn, King of Gondor). Beekeeper (Phelia, Exhuberent Shepard), and TSPJendrek (Ertai Resurrected).

Be sure to mark your calendar for the next Creator Showdown on November 9 when the streamers take on Legacy!

It’s Showcase Challenge Weekend!

It’s time to get the next batch of players invited to MOCS Season 3’s Showcase Qualifiers in November & December.  

You’ll need 40 Season 3 Qualifier Points to enter a Showcase Challenge. The Top 8 finishers in each event earn a Championship Entry Token for the event’s format plus earn Leaderboard Points toward an At-Large berth in the next Showcase!

Here are the dates and times for the second round of Showcase events – we are off our normal pattern for this round only:

Frank Lepore’s Horror Cube Continues

Our resident curator of all things Spooky Season, Frank Lepore, has returned at the perfect moment. See how he has expanded the Horror Cube beyond Innistrad – to Duskmourn, Ixalan, and other corners of the multiverse – in this article.

They try your hand at mastering the Horror Cube until Friday, October 25^th! Normal Cube entry options and prizes will be used, and we’ll feature both a Swiss league and single-elimination queue.

Alternate Play Schedule

Here’s a look at the schedule of events coming up between now and Magic: The Gathering Foundations. Each description mentions if the Draft is Phantom – cards won’t be added to players’ collections in Phantom events. All transitions take place at 10:00 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC until Nov. 3, 18:00 UTC after) unless otherwise noted.

• Now-October 25 – Just in time for our newest horror set, Frank Lepore returns with his Horror Cube, incorporating Duskmourn and other creepy crawlies from across Magic’s history into the previously Innistrad-themed set. (Phantom)
• Tomorrow-November 6 – 4-player pods of Commander Masters draft return – each League course is two matches with winner-take-all prizes. (Phantom)
• October 25-November 12 – The Vintage Cube LIVE Prize Cube makes its appearance digitally – see if you can do any better than the eight from Vegas. This Cube will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. PT once the Live event draft has concluded. (Phantom)

Our developers were able to pick up a few extra cards that will be included in the Set Debut Slot of the Treasure Chest starting tomorrow. In addition to all of the Booster Fun variants from Fallout®, we are picking up three die-rolling cards:

TOMORROW’S PATCH NOTES – October 16, 2024

Administrative

• New-to-Modern cards were inadvertently omitted from Modern Horizons 3 full set objects. Accounts that opened one or more MH3 sets will be granted those 42 cards for each regular or foil set opened during downtime.
  • MH3 sets opened after downtime will include the New-to-Modern cards.

Card Fixes

• Karazaikar, the Eye Tyrant will no longer trigger if it attacks its owner.
• Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls will correctly trigger if multiple opponents lose life at once.
• Paranormal Analyst will display cards returned to hand in the Game Log.
• Capital Punishment will correctly force creature sacrifices for each time Taxes is selected.
• Pia’s Revolution will correctly prompt the targeted player if they want to take 3 damage and then deal that damage on a “Yes” response.
• Distented Mindbender will correctly require cards of appropriate mana values to be chosen (can’t opt out).

Collection

• The back side of Innistrad: Crimson Vow’s double-faced extended-art cards will be visible.

NEXT SCHEDULED DOWNTIME – November 6, 9 a.m.-Noon PT

After tomorrow, the next scheduled maintenance is set for Wednesday, November 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon PT (17:00-20:00 UTC). This is to support the release of Magic: The Gathering Foundations.
