Secrets of Strixhaven on Magic Online

School’s back in session! The five colleges of Magic’s home of wizardry are back in the spotlight when Secrets of Strixhaven (set code SOS) debuts on Magic Online next Tuesday, April 21 at 10 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC).

The downtime to add this set to the game will happen tomorrow, April 15, from 9 a.m. to approximately 12 noon Pacific time (16:00-19:00 UTC). Be sure to follow our social media outlets (Discord, BlueSky and more) to keep real-time tabs on this release and any replacement Scheduled Events.

How to Collect and Play Secrets of Strixhaven

Play Boosters

Each SOS Play Booster will sell for $3.99 USD in the Magic Online Store starting on Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT and contains 1-4 rare/mythics.

For this set, the composition is:

• 6 regular commons
  • 1 in 55 Play Boosters will have a common replaced by a Special Guest card
• 3 regular uncommons
• 1 regular rare or mythic
• 1 regular Mystical Archive card of any rarity
• 1 regular wildcard – that is, a non-foil of any rarity
• 1 foil wildcard – a foil in every pack!
  • This slot can have a Mystical Archive foil!
• 1 basic land – standard-frame, tap-dual, or full-art, in either regular or foil

Premium Boosters

Our exclusive Premium Booster is back!

The 11-card Secrets of Strixhaven Premium Booster will sell for $6.99 USD in the Store starting next Tuesday. Here’s the layout – each Premium booster contains 5 rares/mythics, 3 Mystical Archive cards, and 7-8 foils:

• 2 foil uncommons
• 1 foil common
• 1 foil full-art basic land
• 2 Mystical Archive uncommons (1 regular, 1 foil)
• 1 Mystical Archive rare or mythic (regular or foil)
• 1 foil rare/mythic (regular frame)
• 1 regular borderless Commander set rare/mythic
• 1 regular Booster Fun rare/mythic
  • Main set – Extended Art, Borderless, Field Notes, and Portal Dual Lands

SOS Draft Bundle

The Draft Bundle is back with Secrets of Strixhaven.

Thie idea is “Buy 3, Pay Less” – plus get an avatar! The Draft Bundle will sell for $32.00 USD in the Magic Online Store starting next Tuesday. That represents a $4 savings off buying Event Tickets to cover those events.

The Draft Bundle contains three Draft Entry Tokens which can be used to enter the Secrets of Strixhaven Draft League during its first three weeks, plus this set’s avatar exclusive to this product: Spellbook Seeker!

Neither the Bundle nor its contents are tradeable.

• Events: These Tokens are only for the Draft League, not single-elimination.
• Expiration: Draft Entry Tokens must be used in the first three weeks of League play – they expire Wednesday, May 13 at 10 a.m. PT. Unused Tokens will be removed at that time and are non-refundable!
  • The Bundle will leave the store on Tuesday, May 12.

Secrets of Strixhaven Commander

This set has five new Commander decks for you to enjoy (set code SOC) - one for each of Strixhaven’s colleges! Each deck features 12 brand-new cards plus a suite of reprints. The decks will sell for $29.99 USD each in the Store starting next Tuesday. They are:

• Lorehold Spirit (red-white)
• Prismari Artistry (blue-red)
• Quandrix Unlimited (green-blue)
• Silverquill Influence (white-black)
• Witherbloom Pestilence (black-green)

New Starter Kit – Lifegain and Eerie

Players who are new to Magic Online have another entry-level product to help them acclimate the game when SOS debuts.  Our Lifegain and Eerie Starter Kit includes two 60-card, typal-strategy decks playable in Standard out of the box. You can see the decks’ contents here.

Event Updates

Premodern Championship Week in May

We have another format championship week on tap at the end of May when Premodern enthusiasts duel for a Super Qualifier’s worth of digital prizes, including an event-exclusive avatar for the Top 32! Keep an eye out for info on this next month.

Alternate Play Schedule

Here’s a look at the schedule of events coming up between now and the next set release. Each description mentions if the Draft is Phantom – cards won’t be added to players’ collections in Phantom events. All transitions take place at 10:00 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC) unless otherwise noted.

• Tomorrow-April 21: We close out TMT season with a beloved format – Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. (Keeper)
• April 21-May 5– Secrets of Strixhaven Limited is front and center for these two weeks.
  • The Best-of-One League returns but will only run for the first week until April 29.
• May 6-June 3 – Vintage Cube is back with updates from the newest set, plus it will support the next MOCS Showcase in early June! (Phantom)
• June 3-17 – Vintage Supreme Draft returns for two weeks – the pick-2-and-toss-em format with a custom setup (including duplicates for key archetypes). This will be updated with new cards unlike the last run. (Phantom)
• June 17-23 – We'll close out SOS season and lead up to Magic Online’s 24^th birthday by bringing back the original favorite draft format: Invasion Block Draft! (Keeper – yes, really!)

Commander Corner

Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Commander Decks On Sale Tomorrow!

As we were going through our list of cards left to code to catch up in Commander, we realized that the decks from NEC – Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Commander – never made it into our Store back in 2022. So, we’re pulling them out of the archives and onto our digital shelf following tomorrow’s downtime!

Each deck will cost $29.99 USD and is playable right out of the box. The options are:

• Buckle Up (blue-white)
• Upgrades Unleashed (red-green)

Commander Backlog Update

We continue to chip away at our Commander Backlog slowly but surely. Since we last discussed the Backlog in December 2024, we have added seven more decks to the Magic Online Store. The team has made a lot of overall progress with 23 decks completed to date!

Here’s what is left for us to get:

• Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander (AFC) - 4 decks
• Battle for Baldur’s Gate Commander (CLB) - 1 deck
• Commander 2021 (aka Strixhaven Commander – C21) - 1 deck
• Streets of New Capenna Commander (NCC) - 4 decks

We have a couple more periods of dedicated Cardset team time planned this year to try and vanquish the main Backlog once and for all!

Magic Online Players Rewards (MOPR) Update

Here’s what is coming up in MOPR.

The grant on Friday, May 1 covers April activity. It will feature all of the Promo Pack uncommons from SOS - the five charms in a foil-etched version.

Then on Monday, June 1, we’ll reward May play with foil versions of uncommons from the Mystical Archive!

Treasure Chest Update

Treasure Chests will update when SOS goes on sale next Tuesday – be sure to watch our Twitter/X (@MagicOnline) and our Discord channel to confirm this before opening Chests.

For full details on the changes to come, check out the information page when it updates later this week. Many of your Booster Fun favorites will be available via the Treasure Chest – see the chart above.

Also included will be brand-new, retro-frame versions of Pauper staples just in time to bling out deck for Pauper season in the Magic Online Champions Showcase!

After next Tuesday, the next Treasure Chest update will occur on Wednesday, May 20.

Avatars

We have another new set of Avatars to show you!

New accounts created between next Tuesday and June 23 will receive the Pestbrood Sloth avatar.

Our next round of Vintage Cube starting May 6 will offer a Bundle-exclusive avatar – Sanar, Unfinished Genius.

Then it’s time to bestow some Prestige! As usual, you get five points for each Competitive trophy you earn in Leagues and one for each Friendly trophy. At the end of the season (when Magic: The Gathering® | Marvel Super Heroes releases), you'll earn every avatar for which you qualify.

Earning at least five points gets you the uncommon Moseo, Vein’s New Dean avatar.

Earning at least 20 points nabs you the rare Professor Dellan Fel avatar.

Earning 40 points or more rewards you with the mythic rare Ral Zarek, Guest Lecturer avatar.

Odds and Ends

• Secrets of Strixhaven will be redeemable. Redemption Tokens are planned to go on sale in the Store on Wednesday, May 20. Stay tuned to the Weekly Announcement Blog at com for details.
  • As a reminder, physical foil redemption sets are no longer available. You can redeem a full digital set of either regular or premium Secrets of Strixhaven cards to get a regular physical set. Full details can be found here.
• Constructed and Limited events will rotate to SOS versions of the same event on release day, so make sure you complete any Leagues before the set launches.
• Reprints in Secrets of Strixhaven that are entering a format won’t become legal until the new Leagues kick off next Tuesday.
• The refreshed New Account Kit with SOS commons will be available next Tuesday when SOS goes on sale.
  • The Account Upgrade Kit, Collection Upgrade Kit, and Commander Workshop will not be updated with this set.
